Dragonshot

A CAVE-based archery experience which combines motion-controlled combat and epic dragon-slaying challenges.

Dragonshot is an immersive archery simulation developed for the Human-System Interaction (HIS) Lab's CAVE virtual reality environments. The project explores how immersive displays and motion-tracked interaction can transform traditional ranged combat mechanics into a physically engaging and intuitive experience.

Players face off against a giant dragon using a virtual bow and arrow controlled through natural archery movements. By combining a tracked controlled with a hand-tracking device, players physically draw, aim, and release arrows, creating a realistic and embodied combat experience. Success requires both precision and quick reactions as players target the magic crystals that protect the dragon while defending themselves against incoming fireball attacks. Once the crystals are destroyed, the player can then attack the dragon directly.

To accommodate different skill levels, the system includes aiming assistance through a trajectory preview, while experienced players can disable these aids for a more challenging experience. Multiple difficulty levels also alter gameplay such that it is fun and challenging for everyone without being overly frustrating.

There are also two arcade modes, one where players try to shoot as many crystals as they can within a time limit, and another one where the dragon keeps shooting fireballs quickly and the player tries to survive for as long as possible. The highest scores ever are saved locally in the CAVE, try to beat them for yourself.

Developed in Unity using VotanicXR, Dragonshot investigates how immersive visualization systems can enhance player embodiment, engagement, and physical interaction within virtual environments.
