Intelligent Space Planning Platform

Leveraging Virtual Reality for facility layout redesign

Zhengji Liang, Siu Fung Wong, Leith K.Y. Chan, Zixuan He

The inspiration for this research project arose from real-world challenges encountered in my daily work. Specifically, I observed the dynamic changes in human resources and facility equipment. Virtual Reality (VR) technology offers a unique advantage with its 3D visualization and immersive experiences. What if we could create a virtual laboratory environment and conduct re-layout simulation experiments without physically moving tables and chairs? This approach would significantly reduce costs and save time.

Our systematic methodology involves several key components:
- Data Collection: We gather relevant data from the physical environment.
- Digital Transformation: We apply procedures to convert this data into a digital format.
- Collaboration Platform: We develop a virtual environment where stakeholders can collaborate effectively.

The ultimate output of our proposed system will be an optimal space redesign plan and an in-house logistics strategy. By harnessing advanced spatial computing technology, we aim to enhance daily work environments and improve overall efficiency.

VR-Enabled Intelligent Space Planning Platform for Facility Layout Redesign

The facility environment is a workspace for employees to engage in creative endeavours. However, due to the dynamic nature of human resources, the interior layout of the facility often requires frequent adjustments. Typically, the facility's interior environment is relatively fixed because of the stable equipment, allowing limited changes during the space planning process. The challenge lies in achieving maximum available working space while minimising alterations to the layout. To address this problem, this paper proposes a framework of intelligent space planning platform for facility layout redesign projects, leveraging VR technology and optimisation algorithms within a simulated virtual world. Users can compare different layout design alternatives, optimise equipment allocation, and design furniture placement routes. Ultimately, the platform aims to provide the optimal layout plan and an optimised in-house logistics plan for the renovation process. Through this method, this research contributes to the improvement of functionality, safety and efficiency in facility environments.
